Medtronic/Covidien

Senior Technical Writer / Content Designer
Project Overview
Created instructions for use (IFUs) for all components of a class III medical device for at-home use in patients with CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease).
My Contributions
Designed, wrote, edited, and produced product documentation, graphic design assets, and designed content for the user interface to be implemented in a new implantable Peritoneal hemodialysis (PD) Class III Medical device using a DITA CCMS, (component content management system), and worked with Human Factors, Tech Writers, and PMs, to ensure the UI and product documentation content could be translated and localized.
As a Senior Technical Writer at Covidien/Medtronic, I was responsible for creating medical device user guides, patient and clinician manuals, home use guides, service manuals, and instructions for use (IFUs) for new and existing patient monitoring and renal care product lines. I managed all aspects of documentation development, translation, and documentation approval reviews, and converted FrameMaker documentation to XML using Oxygen XML/DITA CCMS.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, my work was crucial in helping Medtronic continue to operate and move forward. The medical device documentation I created was essential for the safe and effective use of our hemodialysis and patient monitoring products, and my efforts to ensure that these materials were accurate and up-to-date were a key part of the company's success.

I am a highly skilled technical writer/content designer with experience in medical device technology industry, and I am confident in my ability to design clear and concise content that meets the needs of both patients and healthcare professionals. I am proud to have contributed to Medtronic's mission of improving the lives of patients during this challenging time.

CCMS Development

I contributed to the design and development of a new product for treating patients with CKD and pioneered the product's content design strategy for the user interface and the 58 separate instructions for use (IFUs) for the system parts and accessories.

Oxygen XML

I enjoyed using the Desktop Oxygen XML editor for creating PDFs, but for software strings and the product documentation that need to be translated, I pioneered the migration of the XML documentation and graphic design assets into the Component Content Management system to create a content design system for their existing content and for new products currently being developed.

DITA

Information from the manuals had to be updated to the new CCMS, to enable translations with a translation memory and translation vendor. Most of the content analyzed could be segregated in the CCMS using a specific information architecture to house the documentation and content. It was my work and thought leadership that helped move the content strategy into the digital content management system space.
